On Thursday 5th October, Loyola School Bistupur had two very special visitors who addressed the students in the morning assembly, Fr Robert Athickal and Ms Devopriya Dutta. The topic of their talk was to inform the students of the Tarumitra Movement.
Tarumitra is a nationwide students' organization to promote ecological sensitivity in India. It has been campaigning for sensitizing various sections of society on ecological issues. It was started in 1988 by students in Patna, India. The U.N has conferred a Special Consultative Status to Tarumitra from 2005. It has over 2,00,000 members in over 1000 high schools and colleges. Tarumitra has also had several full-time volunteers from abroad.
Loyola School, in collaboration with Loyola School Telco, the Loyola Alumni Association and the Loyola Hindi School, will soon formally launch a branch of Tarumitra at the Jesu Bhawan Complex. Initial discussions are being held with a team of teachers, students and alumni members on the roadmap to take this ambitious project forward. Small but steady steps will be taken to initially sensitize the students about the need to save planet earth from total annihilation. Children will prepare a green calendar which will enable them to celebrate all important days/festivals in a green way. Bird feeders will be installed at various points in the school. Reuse and recycling of answer scripts as papier mache to make various objects is another activity on the anvil.
Saplings were planted at the Jesu Bhavan complex on the occasion.
The project is ambitious, but with sustained effort and continued motivation, we are confident that the initiative will spread its wings and encompass the entire Stel City.
