March 3, 2014, the 175th birth anniversary of Jamsetji Tata, a historic date for Indian industry, "Founder's Day" for Jamshedpurians, young and old, and the day that sparked off the reunion of Loyola's Class of '58.
A few days later, Dhan Madan, arguably the most colourful member of the class of '58, emailed his numerous Jamshedpur friends reminiscing about the good old days, and wondering whether a reunion of the class of '58 was a possibility. The email was duly networked to several of Dhan's classmates. In less than 10 days, at-least 8 had enthusiastically clambered onto the reunion bandwagon. Emails zipped around, and furious googling, supplemented by down-to-earth searches, swiftly tracked down thirteen of the surviving fifteen of 1958's "Magnificent Seven-teen". A Jan 2015 date was agreed upon for the big event — gentlemen of our vintage can ill afford to take the long view — and the classmates based in India took over the planning. V.R. Nair worked his contacts to organise accommodation and local logistics. Jamshedpurians, Tushar and Zarin Kabi, took care of happy hours' hospitality, and Dhan's emails ensured that the enthusiasm for the reunion continued unabated. We had hoped for a full turnout, but two classmates, based overseas, dropped out due to health and other reasons.

I arrived in Loyola on the 16th of December, 1963. I was received at the gate by Fr. Kennedy, the Rector and Principal at that time. He picked up my tin box. He said to me "Paul, follow me", as he walked into the school campus with a briskness that one could not but notice.
The name Fr. Graham awakens many wonderful memories in me. I was a religious with the Irish Patrician brothers when I left them, to work in Jamshedpur to look after my alcoholic father's five children. I found a friend in Fr. Graham. I think he was teaching Maths at that time. He did not treat me like a layman. He treated me like one of his own. We often went walking in the evening. We discussed everything under the sun.
Darjeeling has been facing a crisis due to political issues, which has resulted in the city being isolated due to economic blockade. The people of this beautiful city are suffering from poverty, hunger and disease.
The Alumni Association of St Joseph's School, Northpoint, Darjeeling (which is a school run by the Jesuit Fathers) has come forward to help the people in need. They have opened community kitchens which are providing free food to the hungry.
Loyola School, Jamshedpur and Loyola Alumni Association are jointly lending a helping hand in this philanthropic work.
Loyola School, Jamshedpur was started in January 1947 and Fr. Cecil Leeming, S.J. was its first principal. The Loyola Alumni Association (LAA) really began with the graduation of the first student, T. Srinivasan, in 1951.
As years rolled by the LAA threw its doors open to boys who had to leave before graduation because their fathers got transferred, or had to leave to switch over to the Matriculation course.
During his 34 years at Loyola (1950 - 84), Fr. Edward Dineen, S.J. was the contact person for the Old Boys (Alumni). He had a cardex file on each ex-Loyolean - his name, years at loyola, Year of graduation, colleges he studied in, the work he was doing, marital status,... listed on it. He updated these (cardex) whenever an ex-Loyolean visited him. The other Jesuit Fathers came and went, but Fr. Dineen remained to welcome them.
In 1982 the Old Boys met to bid farewell to Fr. Eugene Power, S.J. who was transferred to Allahabad Seminary, and to discuss ways to collect funds for the completion of Fasy Auditorium. They staged two plays and collected advertisements for the souvenir to realise a good amount.
Fr. Rocky Vaz, S.J., an ex-Loyolean, became Rector - Principal of Loyola in March 1983. The old boys involved in the above mentioned two projects, requested him to bring together more old boys and activate the Loyola Old Boys' Association. At one of the meetings it was decided to rename it Loyola Alumni Association.
Its activities included meetings, dinners, picnics, felicitations, career talks, attending Calcutta Chapter get-togethers, zonal meetings, First All India Congress of Jesuit Alumni at St. Xavier's College, Calcutta. Also, Astad Deboo's Dance Show to purchase Oric computers for the School with the collection from the Souvenir, getting help from Dr. Jamshed J. Irani to build the New Science Labs. on the top floor, help prepare the temporary canteen and donate two kiosks, and get aid from Tata Tubes Division to build the cycle and scooter stands in 1985-86.
In order to build up a fund, Life Membership fee of Rs. 250 per member was introduced. Today the same is Rs. 1-5,000 per member.
The LAA continued to prosper under the able guidance of Fr. Eric Cassel, S.J. who took over as Principal from July 1987. Five years later, on July 9, 1992, the responsibility of guiding the destiny of LAA fell on the shoulders of Fr. Pius Fernandes, S.J. when he succeeded Fr. Cassel as principal of Loyola School. In the last six years (1994-2000) LAA has made astounding progress. Its total membership is nearly 500 and is increasing steadily. The Alumni Free Clinic started in the time of Fr. Vaz, is continuing to give free medical advice and medicines to the poor patients attending it. Now even T.B. patients are being given free medicines, thanks to the generosity of a Loyola Alumnus. Credit goes to Fr. Pius, President, and the dedicated Alumni doctors and volunteers who give uninterrupted and selfless service on Saturdays from 4.30 p.m to 5.30 p.m.
Now LAA has to its credit many out-reach programmes in the neighbouring villages - Jilling Charhi, Lupungutu. There they hold periodical Health Check-up Camps and once a year, perform successful cataract operations on the villagers at Lupungutu.
LAA is also working in collaboration with the Vocational Training Centre at Loyola, to train underprivileged boys and girls in sewing, typing and making machine knitted sweaters. They also have plans to train these youngsters as car and TV mechanics, waiters, gardeners, electricians... by drawing on the contacts of other LAA members. This is to help them become self-employed after their academic education.
Of late, the alumni have been reaching out even further. They started LAA Chapters in Delhi and Mumbai, and quite recently, Fr. Pius and Dr. Kailash Dubey started several Chapters in the different cities of the U.S.A.
The Core Committee meets 6 times a year, while twice a year, the General Body Meeting is held.
Giant steps have been taken under the Secretaryship of Dr. Dubey. Mr. Sudhir Amin and Dr. Surojit De are the Vice-President and Jt. Secretary respectively, of the Federation of Jesuit Alumni/Ae Associations of India.
Efforts are being made to bring more and more Loyola alumnae under the umbrella of LAA to foster in them a sense of belonging to their 'alma mater' and to tap their energy, time and resources to help their Association work for the welfare of the poor and the marginalised of India and for a better social order.
All the Best, LAA!
Three cheers for you, LAA.

What makes the Loyola Alumni Association unique is that its members are not just Corporate Czars ready to write out fat cheques for their alma mater in a bid to pay off their debt to the institution that nurtured them. LAA has always come up with initiatives that are zara hat ke.
Faced with the challenge of keeping children engaged when teachers go on leave and not wanting to burden the other teachers with additional classes, the school management approached LAA for suggestions and the members came up with the idea of volunteering their time for the school and its students.
And suddenly 'free periods' have taken on a whole new meaning.
Many alumni members have stepped forward to take classes, and have gone beyond conventional lessons to guide students on choosing the right career or shared motivational mantras with them or trained them on public speaking or quizzed them on General Knowledge or even shared an unforgettable experience from their own lives.
The idea is to broaden students' horizons and open new windows of thinking in their minds.
The initiative though in its teething stage has already produced multiple benefits. It has not only given the alumni a unique platform to pay back their alma mater, it has also helped them connect with the current generation and share their knowledge. Also, it has infused a sense of pride in the students when they see their school alumni so successful in life and so generous in giving back to society. We can now bask in the satisfaction that we have become true role models for the younger generation.
As the leader amongst educational institutions in the Steel City, Loyola has once again led the way in demonstrating that education goes far beyond text books and examinations and that what is a challenge to many, can be converted into a great opportunity.
This initiative has been widely appreciated in the local newspapers.
We, the members of LAA, are proud to be a part of this unique initiative.

A chapter from the book Once Upon a Time written by Fr. George Hess, SJ
Many incidents took place during my ten years as principal yet they are not the life of the school. They are something like the presence of the fat in meat which gives taste to what otherwise would be bland; and so it is memorable incidents, other than school routine, which mark days and years.
School routine in Loyola in 1953 began with the annual start of the school year in early January and a few years later, for reasons of school certificate exams in February, the opening of classes moved to March. For me the January opening was a major difference from the American school/college system where the opening of classes takes place in September, the end of summer.

In 1953 the management of the Tata Iron and Steel Company allotted three houses for Loyola Faculty in Kadma and B H Area locations. It was indeed a privilege for us to dwell in the TISCO houses, because they were exclusively allotted for their employees only. This could happen because of the friendship between Rev. Fr. George A Hess S. J., the Rector-Principal of Loyola and the then General Manager to the TISCO, Mr. Neil Hailey, who was from City of Gary, Indiana.
Also, the TISCO management offered Loyola a site on lease for the construction of the houses for its staff members. It was a magnanimous offer indeed and they suggested that the school could choose one of the two areas for the buildings. One of them was between the TISCO Aerodrome and Sonari area and the other one was near the "Garam Nala" in Sakchi.
One score and a half decade later, the winter morning sun touched my face, As I stood in the vast expanse of the school courtyard, Where the old greenwood tree had stood in sway.
At the time when I joined Loyola as the Class Teacher of Standard 3 B in 1954, Mr. Blaise Khare was teaching an optional subject, Health Science, and General Science for upper Standards 7, 8, & 9. I handled all subjects, except Hindi, for my Standard 3 B class. I moved up as the Class Teacher of the same class year by year in Standards 4 B, 5 B and 6 B! To improve my qualification, I took study leave in 1956 -57 for acquiring my B. Ed Degree from Andhra University. After my graduation, I took up my schedule again as the Class teacher of 6 B, 7 B, 8 B, and 9 B as the years rolled on!
Physics and Chemistry Laboratories were very well established under the matchless care of Rev. Fr. Simon Kirsch, S. J. The final year Senior Cambridge students were sent to St. Xavier's School in Hazaribagh for writing their exams, since Loyola was not yet a center for it.
Before 1947, the old Auditorium belonged to the C .N. R Club, Chota Nagpur Railway Club.
Jesuit Fathers landed in Jamshedpur from Maryland Province of the U S A in about 1947. They acquired this auditorium and some scattered rooms near it from them, and started the school. They named it as Loyola School in honour of their favoured saint, St. Ignatius of Loyola.
Little known facts about the splendor of Loyola School, Jamshedpur. Period: 1954 to 1969.
This is written as a tribute to Rev. Fr. Hess, S. J. whose Birthday falls on October 10 and for the other subsequent Principals that followed him.
At the end of the year 1954 in December, Fr. Hess invited all the faculty members to Luncheon in the Banquet Hall of the Beldih Club. This was the first of this kind to occur in Loyola that reminds us that it is comparable to any Luncheons given by the Head of a country to the dignitaries. The Dining Tables had very neatly spread immaculately white Table cloths and the names of the faculty members placed on them to indicate who sits where, taking care that there is proper inter mingling of the dining partners. Just imagine this scenario!
